Dr. Ashwini Kumar Srivastava
HOD Biosciences
Bioscience is the branch of the sciences concerned with living organisms,
from microorganisms to towering trees and gigantic whales. Bioscience
technology is a growing and dynamic field that applies life processes to
practical uses, such as the manufacturing of medical devices and the development
of new bioscience procedures. From pharmaceutical drugs to pacemakers,
genetically engineered plants to gene therapy, bioscience technology
is at work all around us.
Bioscience research organizations are becoming quite numerous in today’s time.
Because these organizations have a lot of work to complete, and loads of
life-saving discoveries to be made, they are progressing more and more
each day in their search for helping people live happier, healthier, longer
lives. Careers in the bioscience industry are as varied as bioscience products
themselves. Biotechnicians work in research, manufacturing and quality control,
in analytical labs and in the agricultural field.
The Department of Biosciences under Faculty of Applied Sciences offers
undergraduate and post graduate courses viz. three years B. Sc Honours
Biotechnology degree, two years M.Sc. Biotechnology, M. Sc. Microbiology,
M. Sc. Bioinformatics and M. Sc. Biochemistry courses. The department has
well equipped research laboratories and well qualified faculty members
having doctoral, post doctoral degrees and research training from India
and abroad are carrying out researches in genetic engineering, biodiversity,
molecular toxicology, prevention and control of cancer and infectious diseases,
targeted drug delivery systems, nanobiotechnology, cancer biology, molecular
immunology, bioinformatics, plant biotechnology, biogeochemical, animal biotechnology
and microbiology. They have published more than 200 research papers in different
national and international journals having high impact factor. The department
has the privilege of receiving research grants from central Government and state
Government agencies e. g. SERB, DST, DBT, New Delhi, UP Council of Science &
Technology, Biodiversity Board of Uttar Pradesh. The research scholars of the
department are regularly receiving fellowships from UGC and DST such as Maulana
Azad Junior and Senior National Fellowship, INSPIRE Fellowship, Project Fellowship
etc. There are 35 internal and 35 external research scholars working in different
national laboratories like CDRI, NBRI, IITR, CIMAP, SGPGI, CISH, NBFGR, IISR, KGMU etc.
MOU’s have been signed with CISH, IISR, RMLIMS to collaborate inter institutional research programmes.
